Consisting of photocopy of letter, Sen. Strom Thurmond, 7 Dec. 1970, Washington, D.C., U.S. Senator Strom Thurmond to Dr. Charles Lee, S.C. Dept. of Archives and History, Columbia, S.C., relaying a number of items sent to Thurmond from Admiral George Hyman Rickover commorating keel-laying ceremonies, 1 Dec. 1970, for the U.S.S. South Carolina in Newport News, Va., and thanking Lee for research assistance in preparations for Thurmond's remarks at the ceremony. Items include a metal facsimile of the keel plate, "USS South Carolina DLGN-37 ... authenticated by Margaret Middleton Rivers [of] Charleston, South Carolina" and including a quote by U.S. Representative L. Mendel Rivers; also includes commemorative envelope and printed cards re statistics and drawing of vessel; report, 7 Mar. 1972, re history of the six ships that bore the name South Carolina, 1780-1974, compiled by L.A. Olsson, Naval History Division of Navy Dept.; and photocopied clipping from The State (Columbia, S.C.), Dec. 1974, annoucing preparations for the commissioning of the most recent U.S.S. South Carolina, a nuclear-power guided missle frigate.
